Granite
Found in many parts of the world, granite is available in a wide variety
of colours. It has a cool smooth surface which is ideal for pastry making
and suitable for all types of kitchen worktops. Available in six price
groups and in thicknesses of 20mm, 30mm and 40mm, granite is extremely
hardwearing and durable, withstanding most extremes of temperature
When purchasing natural marbles, granites, slate and stone, it must be
appreciated these natural substances are, in most cases, over a million
years old. They come from parts of the world which have, in the past,
seen continents and seas change place and have been subject to earth
movement, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Due to these environmental factors, considerable variation may occur in
the colouration and veining of marble/granite/slate/stone extracted from
a developing quarry. Uniformity of appearance should not be expected.
Each type or piece of stone is unique and has its own different
characteristics; therefore no two pieces of stone can ever be exactly the
same.
Marbles and stone may even contain fossilised remains of shells, fish,
animals etc.
Marble/granite/slate/stone are sold throughout the world as inherently
unsound. This may manifest in anything from hairline cracks in some types,
to extensive brecciations in others. It is common place to have to fill
these materials to make good, strengthen and reinforce them. Such repairs
should be regarded as normal and not treated as defective.
Marble, slate and stone are porous materials even when the surface is
polished. Care and respect should always be taken with such things as
wine, cigarettes, cola, acidic products, fruit, oils etc. These can stain
or remove the polish from surfaces.
It is always recommended to wipe up any spillages immediately after they
happen to prevent the liquid penetrating the stone.
For cleaning and maintaining stone work surfaces we recommend the use of a
product called ‘Marble Magic’ this is a stone friendly spray which is
buffed into the work tops to uphold the shine and gloss. This should be
used a few times a week to give the stone a good clean. But
for general day to day cleaning we recommend washing the stone down with
warm soapy water and a clean cloth. Give it a quick buff with kitchen role
and that is all that is required.
Granite is extremely hard and is not easily marked or damaged. However, it
is not indestructible. Other stone products or diamonds will scratch and
mark the surface.
